2012 Toyota Prius Family - Cookeville, TN
Prius Goes Plural
The Toyota Prius has been one of the best selling hybrid vehicles on the market for several years now. When it initially launched the Prius offered plenty of space for passengers and cargo, while offering unheard of fuel economy. Thanks to design overhauls over the past couple of years have made the Prius not only one of the most fuel efficient vehicles on the market but has made it very easy on the eyes as well.
Piggy-backing off the success of the Prius, Toyota has decided to expand the line up and offer the popular hybrid in two new body styles - one larger and one smaller - as well as a plug-in version. These models compliment the previous version of the Prius by offering more space (Prius v), for buyers who are looking for just a few more cubic feet of passenger and/or cargo space, but aren't willing to scarfice gas mileage to get an SUV. The Prius c offers a smaller footprint that any of the other three models, while still maintaining room for 5 passengers and adequate cargo space. Then there is the plug-in model, which plays to the growing crowd of people who want to ditch gasoline altogether.
Toyota 3rd Generation Prius
The 2012 Toyota Prius is available in four different trim lines - Two, Three, Four, and Five. Each trim features the same 1.8-liter 4-cylinder Hybrid engine that gets an EPA estimated 51 mpg city and 48 mpg highway. The 3rd Generation Prius retains the previous dimensions, and allows the new Prius c and Prius v to fill in for buyers who want more or less space. The standard Prius features 93.7 cubic feet of passenger space and 21.6 cubic feet of cargo space.
Inside the Prius features standard Display Audio with a 6.1-inch touch screen with Bluetooh wireless technology. On trim lines Three, Four and Five, the Prius adds standard Entune technology which comes with three years of complimentary access to apps including Bing, iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, OpenTable,, and Pandora.
Toyota Prius c
The 2012 Toyota Prius c is available in four different trim lines - One, Two, Three and Four. The smallest member of the Prius family, offers slightly less interior space than the other models, giving driver 87.4 cubic feet of passenger space and 17.1 cubic feet of cargo space. But with that loss of space, the Prius c does manage to gain a few precious MPGs over the 3rd Generation model. The Prius c will deliver an EPA estimated 53 MPG city and 46 MPG highway compared to the 51/48 ratings of the 3rd Generation.
Because of its smaller size and the fact that Toyota removed just a few standard options, the 2012 Prius c starts at just $18,950. For under $19K you will get standard automatic cliamte control, Bluetooth connectivity, a 3.5-inch TFT multi-information display with customizable settings, remote keyless entry, Toyota's Star Safety system and nine airbags. So while Toyota did remove a few standard features for the Prius c you can see that there are still plenty of high quality features that are standard, and that aren't normally found on a car that starts under $19,000.
2012 Toyota Prius v
The Toyota Prius v took the old Prius model and expanded itself. This new model offers more space, more fun, and only slighly reduced fuel efficiency. May not look all that much bigger than the 3rd Generation model but trust us, it is significantly bigger on the inside. Lets compare the 2012 Toyota Prius v to the 2012 Ford Escape Hybrid.
The Ford Escape Hybrid features 30.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 66.4 cubic feet when folded flat. This mid-size SUV is able to get drivers about 34 MPG in the city and 31 MPG on the highway. The new 2012 Toyota Prius v meanwhile, offers 34.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats up and 67.3 cubic feet when folded down. What is even more impressive is the outstanding fuel economy numbers that the Prius v delivers. Drivers can expect to see EPA numbers around 44 MPG city and 40 MPG highway when behind the wheel of the Prius v. This means a difference of 10 MPG in the city over the Ford Escape Hybrid.
